How money, food and housing worries affect you and your child’s mental health & wellbeing

Many parents in Scotland feel stressed by money worries, high food costs, or insecure housing. These pressures can affect daily life, sleep, and time with children. Food insecurity, including worrying about having enough food, is linked to poorer mental health for both adults and children.

Children pick up on family stress. Long-term stress from poverty, unstable work, or poor housing can affect children’s emotional, social, and behavioural development, making them more anxious, withdrawn, or less able to concentrate.

Support such as the Scottish Child Payment and Best Start Grants can help reduce financial pressure and improve wellbeing for parents and children.
